July Cycling Newsletter
The good news is, the shortest day and longest night is behind us. We are in the middle of winter and so far we have been fortunately with the weather on our pack rides. It has been cold, but dry and we have not yet had to cancel a weekend ride.
Some of you have started training for the Trans-Baviaans, others are participating in the WP winter league. It is good to see a number of groups going out on weekends; there are many options with something for everyone. Remember, this is the time of the year to put in your base training.
We had many stunning rides this past month, but the most memorable one is definitely the Youth Day ride to Webersburg; a breakfast ride to welcome Francois back after his horrible crash. He rode the whole distance on a tandem with Charl, well done! It was also to have Derick join us for the first time after his operation. However, the biggest surprise was Johan’s engagement to Shanna, including the biggest and most original engagement ring I have ever seen. Congratulations Johan and Shanna!
There is still no fixed date for the Coronation Double Century as yet, but we have been hard at work behind the scenes. We managed to secure the same venue as last year and we are busy with securing sponsorships. This year we plan to have three groups again: a sub 6 hour group, a sub 7 hour group and a sub 8 hour group. If you are planning to join us, this is a good time to start your base training! So get on your bike!!
Hosting WP Winter league race
Leon has volunteered our club to host a race at Fisantekraal on the 23rd of July. The event is organized by WP Cycling who will do all the arrangements, licenses etc. We need only to arrange volunteers for the marshaling and motorbikes. No training is needed, it is a once off commitment for a few hours. So please let me have your names for this race, email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Tekkie race and MTB challenge
This is a road run as well as a MTB challenge where our club has been involved for many years. This event takes place on Saturday the 3rd of September 2016. We will need many volunteers for marshalling, water tables etc. Please save this date.
We had two competitions in June:
Free bike setup from Jos at Revolution Cycles
This was won by Hein Brand. I hope this setup will give Hein the edge he needs for his WP winter league cycling.
Thank you Karien for setting this up.
Free phone and tablet covers from Cycology
The two winners of this competition are:
Chrisna van Lille
Congratulations Derick and Chrisna, enjoy your prizes. See below for more info in the special deal Cycology is offering our club members.
Thank you Nell Kirsten for donating these prizes.
Once a month we plan an away ride. In June we had an outing to Jonkershoek. Zoë took us on a beautiful rides which was a first for most of us. A spectacular ride with lots of laughter as well. I recommend you join in on these amazing away rides. It does require a bit of extra effort, but so well worth it.
Please send me a request on Strava if you want to join our Cape Multisport club group on Strava. Marius Carstens, Fanie Nel, Renato Postiglioni and Sharon Whall are last week's leaders. Well done, quite an achievement in these cold and dark conditions.
Please see the FB page for any changes to the training program due to weather and so on. We are halfway through our current training program that runs up to Die Burger MTB race. Our Saturday training rides are base training rides- longer distances with lower intensity. The aim is to get us fit enough for all the races.
Below is the training program up to the Burger Race:
The new cycling tops were launched at our recent club social. The price has gone up, but thanks to the generous donations of Realclean and Umzali Civils, we have managed to keep the increases much lower than the cost of the increase. The new tops now sell at a still very reasonable R360.
