TRIATHLON NEWSLETTER – NOVEMBER 2016

Good Day Triathletes,

A look at the events in October 2016

Slanghoek Triathlon

MTB day: For the first time in probably the history of Slanghoek, we experienced a cold and rainy day.  The MTB trails got messy and made a fairly non-technical cycling route challenging.  Once we hit the run, the misty rain had disappeared and we were treated to a cool relaxing run.  Thank you to all CMC athletes who attended and those who got age group podiums!

Road day: Slangoek as we know it – hot & spectacular!  Swim is always choppy – not the water, but the mad scramble to reach the first buoy.  It seems that most novice athletes have learned either from Cape Ultra Tri or Clanwilliam to make a mental picture of the T1 bike spots as no athlete ‘lost’ their transition zone this year.

The non-draft legal cycle was hot and windless.  Keeping a legal draft zone was challenging for the long-distance athletes as the short and long courses collided after the half-way mark. Fortunately, this challenge was recognized by the WPTA-marshals.

As the day went on, it became hotter. Those doing the Olympic distance, was in for an 11:00 sandy off-road run in scorching heat.

We were lucky to have a very familiar face behind the lenses (Chris Hitchcock) to capture our smiles amidst the agony. The brilliant photos by Chris are still available for purchase on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/pg/iqelae/photos/?tab=album&album_id=562521460621540

Saturday morning and midweek Swims

Swimming at Phisantekraal has increased in popularity. The dam has been reserved for a few more midweek sessions in December as well as Saturday mornings. Due to the strict arrangements with the farmer and landowners, these swim opportunities are strictly controlled. The dates are announced on our Facebook page in the ‘events’ section.

Triathlon Wetsuits: We were fortunate to have SailFish attending one of the swim opportunities during which our athletes were given an opportunity to swim in their wetsuits.

As you are preparing for 70.3, here some advice from Colleen de Oliveira:

Colleen and Riaan have shared the following hints and tips on their Infinit3 Facebook Page:

“Here are some tips to deal with what some consider to be the toughest part of any triathlon:

  1. Expect the worst. Go into the event expecting that the start will not be easy. Know that you will bump into people, others will bump into you, but 99% of the time it is all by accident. Also know that the chaos at the beginning will not last for the entire swim, it will break up quickly as different speed swimmers separate.
  2. Don't panic. Prevent your breathing from getting short. Stay as relaxed as you can while everyone else tries to get pole position. Don't let others being frantic affect your state of mind. Stay to the outside. Many will try to stay to the inside, as close to in line with the first buoy as they can get.
  3. Don't follow the pack. Start outside and work your way in as you approach buoy #1.
  4. Run until the water level is at your knees. This will maximize your time on land without being slowed by running through water.
  5. Use shorter strokes to get through the chop. If you are swimming in the ocean and it is a choppy day, this technique helps tremendously. Once you get to some smoother water, go back to long strokes to maximize efficiency and conserve energy.

These 5 tips should help you to at least tolerate, if not enjoy, the beginning of a triathlon season it is around the corner!”

All the best to everyone taking part in Woolworths Triathlon and Jailbreak!
