CYCLING NEWSLETTER – APRIL 2017

A big thank you to all who attended our AGM on the 30th of March at the Durbanville Race Course. We had a great turnout, with athletes from all disciplines and the vibe was good. Our new Chairman is Charl Smit (He has joined us a few times on our pack rides) and our Vice Chairman(woman) is Tracey le Roux. Captains are: Louis Kotze (running), Magda Snyman-Marshall (trail running) and Julia le Roux (tri-athletes). Our regular cyclists will know Julia: energetic, bushy hair and infectious smile (and camelpak). Julia, you can count on our support. She started off with a Champagne breakfast at our Pack Ride, as the ladies MCC and chocolate MTB race was cancelled.

Being a Multisport Club, some of our cyclists recently completed the Ironman in PE. Congratulations all, especially to the first timers. Irma Theron, Morne Theron, Reon Smal, Lukie Snyman, Damien Jones, Elizma Geldenhuys  and the rest of you, well done!

Other cyclists did their first half or full OMTOM this past weekend. Congratulations once again. It is great to see our club living up to its name as a Multisport Club. Just don’t ask me to run, lol (or swim).

Winter Pack Riding

By now, all of you should have noticed that it is very dark in the mornings. For all the newbies, please speak up if you need any assistance with bike lights, both front and back.

Then also for the newbies, tubeless tyre conversion is recommended, just beware that you will have to top up the slime in your tyres every few months. Then the recommended spares to carry are: 2x bombs, spare tube, tyre levers, gator, chain link and multitool.

Lastly, warm clothing will become essential. Wear layers so you can remove some as it warms up. Most importantly, wear visible clothing! In dark, misty conditions you have to be as visible as possible, it is for your own safety!

WP Winter League

The WP Winter League has started and Hein Brand is still looking for more people to join him. Please contact him (0829277834) if you have any questions. If you want to get strong and fast, this is the league to join. We want to build on last year’s successes.

Training Program

Our Saturday pack rides (longer rides) normally start and finish at Mugg & Bean in Durbanville. Please check the weekly posts for the route and start times.

For the less fit, please contact Liezl Meiring, she hosts the shorter and slower pack rides. She has pack rides on Saturdays and Sundays, they start at Klein Joostenberg.

Julia has volunteered to host recovery rides on Sundays, also from Klein Joostenberg. So no excuse not to ride!

Club Apparel

We have received more stock from the suppliers: Tops and arm warmers.  Unfortunately, we have had to increase the prices. Thank you Umzali for your generous sponsorship for the cycling tops, this enables us to sell the tops way below cost price. The new price for the cycling tops is R450, still a bargain. We want to encourage you to buy and wear the cycling tops, it is always great to see the red army on the road and at races.

For the next month, please contact Estelle our club secretary if you need any of the following:

Buffs, white and black arm warmers, cycling top and gilets. Then there is a range of non-cycling apparel such as peaks and tops. Also do not forget o order your CMC Club jacket from Estelle, they are R450 and you can try on the samples for sizing.

Membership Cards

Our club has membership cards which we can use to get discount from various vendors – our list is growing. Please contact Estelle if you need a membership card.

Sponsors

Please consider our sponsors, they have supported our cyclists generously, but of course with marketing they expect to get a return. Our DC Sponsors: Please contact Fanie Nel (Fanie@stepp.co.za) for info on Stepp, Zoona and Sovereign regarding the services they offer. Rectron (you should know them) and Umzali Civils were our other two DC sponsors. Then throughout the year, Realclean and Umzali have supported us with wonderful sponsorships
