In general, cooler temperatures begin to prevail at this time of year and the urge to sleep in takes hold. This year, however, we are experiencing an ‘Indian summer’ which is certainly great for training but also concerning with our current water crisis. Despite these water challenges, we managed to find an absolute gem where we can host our open water swimming in Devon Valley.
Open water swim
We hosted the first swim/brick session on Saturday, 29 April at Devon Valley with a temperature of 28 degrees at 7h15. The beginners and experienced swimmers thoroughly enjoyed their swim.
We had a number of hosts to assist with the brick sessions. Members were spoilt for choice and had the option to either run or cycle post swim followed by breakfast or head to breakfast at the bistro on the farm.
Going forward the swim session will take place on a Saturday afternoon. We are hoping that the Saturday afternoon slot will suit the majority’s training schedule. We will post the group swim event invite on our Facebook page.
Ironman
We had an incredible time with our Ironman athletes at the Ironman Social on the 21st April at Ke-Monate Restaurant, Signal Gun. There was champagne, lucky draw giveaways for adults and kids, yummy cupcakes and great conversations. It was really special to have the opportunity to share in their experiences.
Some of our Ironman athletes not only completed Ironman South Africa and also took on the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon.

Other notable achievements
Freedom Swim Robben Island to Big Bay 8 April
Well done to Dieter Oosthuizen (“aka Yoda”) who successfully completed the Robben Island swim crossing. The conditions were challenging due to a strong wind prior to the swim which impacted surface conditions, chop from all directions and a sudden drop in water temperature. The water temperature at the start was 12.7C outside the harbour to sub 10C at Big Bay. The event was called off and therefore no results are officially recorded.
