It is the middle of winter, yes it is cold and dark and wet, but now it is time for the tough guys and girls to show their mettle. This has been an exciting year with both MTB and road races happening throughout the winter season. So there is more than enough reason to get going, but just to give you that extra bit of encouragement, we have a competition planned for the month of July. More about that later in the newsletter. cycling2.png

I want to highlight again the importance of being visible on the road. Have strong, bright flashing backlights, wear bright colours etc. PPA has a very good article on this, please read it:

June also means Tour de France, so if it really is too dark and cold to cycle, get inspired by following the TDF.

Our Cyclists

With the winter here, some cyclists decided it is time to go north where it is summer now. Morne Theron participated in the triahtlon in Pescara Italy, Dieter Oosthuizen in Edinburgh and Christa and Behrend completed an epic 1450km self-supporting cycling tour through the Netherlands.

At home, the ladies continue doing very well in the races:  congratulations Almari de Milander on your 1st place in PPA Cyclo Sportif #2, Sharon Whall on your 4th place (2nd in age group), Ilana de Swardt 11th place and Yolande van der Walt on your 1st place in your age category finish.

Competition time

We have a competition time for the most kilometers covered in the month of July, please read Charl’s DC newsletter.

Then we also have 3 entries to give away for the MTB Tekkie Challenge: if you sell 5 entries, you get one entry free. So go out and market and if you get 5 people to confirm to me that you advertised the race and approached them to enter, you get a free entry. This is valid for both MTB distances: the 20km and the 40km.

Trans Baviaans and Karoo to coast

Both these two races are a logistic challenge with the start and finish being far apart. Please communicate amongst each other if you are looking for transport/accommodation or can offer transport/ accommodation. You are free to use our FB page, as some of you have already done.

Tekkie & MTB challenge

It is expected of every club to host one race a year. This is our yearly race and involves MTBs racing and road running and is held on the 2nd of September, at Jan Kriel school, as a fundraiser for the school. There is a caveat: CMC also gets some income for hosting the MTB event. I appeal to all of you to volunteer.

We need many volunteers:

  • Route markers the day before (done on am MTB and you need to know the route),
  • Marshals for on the day (which non-riders and spouses can also do),
  • Finish line marshals, handing out coke & medals
  • Recovery vehicle to transport people and bicycles back to the start if necessary
  • Cyclists to clean up the route afterward.

Then, also please invite your friends to enter for the MTB ride, remember it is capped. Online entries:

Coronation Double Century

dcFor the newbies that don’t know much about the Coronation Double century, or the DC, it is our flagship event of the year and since 2010 our club has participated in the DC. The race starts and finishes in Swellendam and is a team event with 12 people in a team. The race is raced in reverse order, that is the top seeded teams start last. So the slower teams get to see the top cyclist in the country flying past them. It is a race every cyclist should do; it has been the race for many a cyclist where the cycling bug bit and as they say, the rest is history. It is a race with glitz and glamour, blood sweat and tears, victories and disappointments. Not just a race, an experience not to be missed!

Having said all that, Charl Bezuidenhout, our cycling vice-captain, is in charge of the CMC DC arrangements this year. Please read his newsletter, it contains some important information. Charl will send out regular newsletters from now onwards until the DC.

Please also pencil in your planners a DC dinner towards the end of July and also the R1000 or so deposit required by around middle August.

Lastly, and most importantly, please give Charl and the committee involved with the DC your wholehearted support. It is a thankless and tiresome commitment to keep everybody happy: sponsors, volunteers, cyclists, teams, socials etc. Not to forget the logistics: securing entries, finances, safety, mechanicals etc.

Club kit

To all our new members (and older members), we have an exciting range of Club kit available, please contact our Club Secretary, Estelle for more info.

We also have Membership Cards that you can use to get discount at various suppliers. Again, contact Estelle.

WP Winter League

Any roadies that are looking for some good racing action, there is the WP Winter league. Please contact Hein Brand (0829277834) if you are interested.

Training Program

We post regular rides on Facebook as well as on our Whatsapp groups. Please contact me if you are not getting these notifications. I have compiled a list of all the training rides in our club that I am aware of. Please, if you have a group that trains regularly, share it with the rest of the club. There is more safety and more fun in numbers. Here is a list of the rides. Please note: there are often changes, so contact the relevant person or me if you are interested in joining a pack ride.
